Zawoja
Zawoja lies at the foot of Babia Góra Mount (1,725 m) by the Skawica River. It is a well known tourist and recreation destination and constitutes a starting point for trekking in the area of Babia Góra Mount, the Polica and Jałowiec mountain ranges. The registered office of the Babia Góra National Park is located in the village. Zawoja is one of the longest villages in Poland; it is approx. 18 km long. The village of Zawoja and the village of Skawica are located in the Skawica valley, where waters from the Babia Góra area flow to the Skawa River; both villages were established as a result of settlers’ elbowing their way in the primeval Carpathian forest.
Babia Góra
The biggest attraction of Zawoja is Babia Góra – a mountain massif located in the Babia Góra Range of the Żywiec Beskids in the Western Carpathians. It is the highest peak of the entire Western Beskids and is part of the Polish Crown of Mountains. The boundaries of Babia Góra are defined to the west by Jałowiecka Pass (1017 m above sea level) and to the east by Lipnicka Pass (also called Krowiarki, 1010 m above sea level). To the south, it stretches into the Orawa region, while to the north, the massif steeply descends into the Skawica valley. Within the Babia Góra massif, several peaks can be clearly distinguished: Babia Góra (also known as Diablak – 1725 m above sea level), Gówniak (1619 m above sea level), Kępa (1521 m above sea level), Mała Babia Góra (also called Cyl – 1517 m above sea level), and Sokolica (1367 m above sea level).
